We eat Americans.

Oh yes, in Germany we eat “Amerikaner”. It is a delicious pastry you can get in every bakery at every corner. I have so many childhood memories about getting Amerikaner with my mom. We have never baked them ourselves though because they were so cheap to buy. My mom said they used to be 90 Pfennig and now are probably around 1 Euro.

Why are they called Amerikaner? Well, there are a few different theories on that. One of them is that Americans brought the “black and white cookie” to Germany in the 50s, but Germans were unable to pronounce that, so they just called them “Amerikaner” instead.

I like eating Amerikaner, even though they can be a little dry, especially when not eaten fresh. But a creative topping can make up for that!

For the dough

1 stick of soft butter
125g Sugar
3 eggs
a hint of salt
500g flour
8g of baking powder
1 cup of milk

Beat together the butter with the sugar. Slowly add the eggs and the salt. Mix the flour and the baking powder and add it to the mix along with the milk. Create about 20 little humps of dough on a baking sheet leaving enough space in between them. Bake for about 15mins on 350° Fahrenheit. Let them cool down before adding the topping. And of course turn them upside down before putting the topping on there!
We found this recipe in the Brigitte Magazin and it worked out very well.

  1. Hallo Ihr Beiden!

How much is “a stick” of butter?
