My dad cleaned up the basement recently and found an old family photo of ours. In 1988 my parents had purchased a blue VW Käfer on the blackmarket in Eastern Germany. I was 7 years old then. My family was on cloud nine with that car. We felt like a driving elite, with a secret code: all Käfer drivers had a white ribbon around the antenna, almost like pointing out: we are special. In the DDR it was hard to be special with such a limited selection of versatile goods.
After my little sister was born, we decided to take our family photo on top of our charming vehicle. I remember vividly thinking that I had the coolest parents who would allow me to pop my head out the rooftop just this one time. Looking at it now, I’m more interested in why my dad thought that his mustache was a good choice.
Anyway, I’m happy this photos was brought back to life and it inspired me to find one of those old beetles and take it for a spontaneous spin around Hamburg with my friend. I made some little to go salads with a few ingredients I had at home that I felt like could work well together – and they did. Some cucumber, pair, fresh thyme, a lemon vinaigrette, a baguette and some fresh lemonade.
We ate everything out of the tiny trunk and I felt beautifully thrown back to my old family photo.
Here is the recipe for 2 portions:
1/2 of a cucumber
1 large pair
1 handful of fresh pear
For the dressing:
1/2 squeezed lemon
1 splash of olive oil
salt and peper
Goes well with:
freshly made lemonade with slices of lemon, lime, fresh mint, some honey
And if you’re looking for more salads in a jar, check out the book „Pause im Glas„. It’s filled with delicious recipes – and Liz‘ pretty photos 🙂
