Ever since I’ve been following food-blogs, I feel like there are macarons everywhere! I have to admit I never really got what all the hype is about, but I really wanted to understand it. Maybe because I never came across a cafè or store that served macarons. Or maybe the macaron-hype is more common in the US? I don’t really know, but Jewels and I wanted to try it out. So when we got this great opportunity to work with „Steenbergs Organic“ products, we thought this is the time to dare it!
Yes, we did say we’d write about the challenges‘ outcome „whatever it would be“, but I have to admit I was not 100% happy with my outcome this time! Jewels macarons turned out like out of a magazine! Mine wouldn’t make it there. But both tasted good and that is definitly due to „Steenbergs Organic“ great aromas and sugars! I made rose-flavoured macarons, while Jewels made lemon-flavoured ones.
Before I go back in the kitchen and work on the the next macaron-batch (which hopefully won’t crack) we are so happy to announce our next Give-Away! This Give-Away is for participants in Europe only (excluding Greece and Switzerland).
And for those of you who want to try the macarons and hopefully make little beauties, here’s the recipe:
50 g ground almonds
75 g icing sugar
35 g egg white
a pinch of salt
20 g sugar
1 pinch of baking powder
flavouring or colouring
(i.e. rose or lemon extract)
Mix the almonds with the icing sugar and add the baking powder. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt, then slowly whisk in the caster sugar until thick and white. Fold the almond and icing sugar mixture into the meringue and mix well. It has to have a shiny consistency and should fall off the spatula. Add flavour and colour.
Preheat the oven to 160°C. Fill into a piping bag and pipe small circles onto a baking sheet. Leave to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes until the macarons have a slight skin. This is important – you should be able to touch them lightly without any mixture sticks to your finger. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool.
There are different kinds of fillings. One variation is a buttercream-filling. For that mix 75 g of butter with 30 g of icing sugar. Then just add different flavors and color to it.
