Lemon & Rose Macarons and a new Give-Away!

Ever since I’ve been following food-blogs, I feel like there are macarons everywhere! I have to admit I never really got what all the hype is about, but I really wanted to understand it. Maybe because I never came across a cafè or store that served macarons. Or maybe the macaron-hype is more common in the US? I don’t really know, but Jewels and I wanted to try it out. So when we got this great opportunity to work with „Steenbergs Organic“ products, we thought this is the time to dare it!

Yes, we did say we’d write about the challenges‘ outcome „whatever it would be“, but I have to admit I was not 100% happy with my outcome this time! Jewels macarons turned out like out of a magazine! Mine wouldn’t make it there. But both tasted good and that is definitly due to „Steenbergs Organic“ great aromas and sugars! I made rose-flavoured macarons, while Jewels made lemon-flavoured ones.

Before I go back in the kitchen and work on the the next macaron-batch (which hopefully won’t crack) we are so happy to announce our next Give-Away! Baking Hamper Steenbergs

And for those of you who want to try the macarons and hopefully make little beauties, here’s the recipe:

Macarons
50 g ground almonds
75 g icing sugar
35 g egg white
a pinch of salt
20 g sugar
1 pinch of baking powder
flavouring or colouring
(i.e. rose or lemon extract)

Mix the almonds with the icing sugar and add the baking powder. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt, then slowly whisk in the caster sugar until thick and white. Fold the almond and icing sugar mixture into the meringue and mix well. It has to have a shiny consistency and should fall off the spatula. Add flavour and colour.
Preheat the oven to 160°C. Fill into a piping bag and pipe small circles onto a baking sheet.  Leave to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes until the macarons have a slight skin. This is important – you should be able to touch them lightly without any mixture sticks to your finger. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool.

There are different kinds of fillings. One variation is a buttercream-filling. For that mix 75 g of butter with 30 g of icing sugar. Then just add different flavors and color to it.

    Oh, I really want to try macarons, but I am just to scared of them. 🙂 I read tons of recipes and have two books already, but always think, I would wreck them… But maybe it is time to bake. 😀

    • Do try it! I got ambitious and will also try again! Jewels‘ macarons worked out fine and look wonderful, so it HAS to work somehow!

  2. The macarons look lovely! I’ve been tiptoeing around making macarons for a while now … and am also a bit scared. But I mastered cakepops, now it’s time to take up a new challenge 😀 A set like this would definitely help to overcome fear (I’m already following you on FB & Twitter as feedmeupbeforeyougogo).

    i must be great to bake with so beautifully looking ingredients. I’d love to try baking macarons, it doesn’t seem to be too difficult and I’m mostly too stingy buying them because they are sooooo expensive in the shops.

    I really want to try making macaroons, but so far I have been too scared. Your recipe, however, looks less complicated than most, so I might summon up the courage:-)
    I love baking, so I’d definitely use the products to their full advantage – currently I am into making various buns, such as Scandinavian cinnamon swirls.
    I like & follow both you and Steenbergs.

  6. Don’t worry Liz, making macarons needs time and the right recipe 😉 I had to learn to be humble and serene when making macs and with the recipe by Christophe Felder every mac is getting fine now. But there was lot of junk at the beginning so to speak. I love your clicks – both!!

  7. I’m not a fan of macarons, although I’ve baked them some years ago, too.
    It’s really about the right recipe and there are some tricks. I wrote about it in one of my macarons post ;).

    The Steenberg products are great, do you know where to get them in Germany?

    PS: I liked you on FB, because your blog is just beautiful!

      usually „Goldhahn & Sampson“ has Steenberg’s products, but right now they are working on their online Shop. They will be online soon again, they told me.

    Yummy they look wonderful! I have not tried making macarons myself but i will sure do if I win the set 🙂 i love all the different flavours and my aunt makes them for every occasion… So I will definitely have someone to teach me how to make them!

  9. I’ve heard lots of good things about Steenbergs Organic products but have never ssen them here in Germany and therefore not tried them yet. Same goes for Macarons…I even took a Macaron baking class last year but have never made some myself…

      Steenberg’s products can usually be found at „Goldhahn & Sampson“ via Onlineshop. But I just asked them and they told me they are working on their shop so right now they’re not available but will be soon again.

    Your macarons look absolutely amazing. I don’t think I could do it so evenly, but will definitely try them soon. Am still fighting with my oven over baking stuff equally fast in the whole oven rather than me having to turn cakes etc. around every 5 mins or so to get them evenly baked. But as soon as that crisis is over … macarons it is. Really enjoy your blog – and the photos!
